The title for this piece (read: "The And is Near"), despite being a pun, was designed to represent a show exhibiting some of the world's critical issues. These issues are very important to the human landscape, and I wanted to draw attention to these issues. The design of the poster reflects this.
The poster was an entry to represent the exhibit for my college thesis project.
World social issues are continuously grabbing people's attention as the flow of information is more and more accessible. Whether the issue is raising money to help the victims of hunger in Darfur, or about the rise in eating disorders among U.S. teens, chances are we've heard about it.
My colleagues at Arizona State University and I were tasked with researching and designing a thesis around a national or international social issue. The public showing of our social issue exhibits would be the final result, and a poster needed to be created to advertise the show itself. My idea was 1 of 42 entries.
Because everyone in the world has varied backgrounds and unique interests, there will never be a shortage of issues that are deserving of attention. The number of these issues is continuously growing, so my thought behind the poster was more of a pun than anything.
"The & Is Near" was my way of creating an atmosphere that dealt with the growing number of issues (think "world peace & teen pregnancy & personal credit misuse &…"), but in a way that would entice college students with slightly off-color humor. Social issues are serious business, but in order to get the audience in the door, why not alter the tone?
Large, white, Helvetica typography laid on bright red background color dominate the poster as a means of drawing viewers in to see the micro-information, which consisted of the exhibitors (my colleagues and I), the issues being exhibited, and the faculty involved. The use of one-color printing was double, with the other benefit being cost of production, should it be chosen. It should be noted that my poster was not chosen to represent the show.
